MIRAMICHI, N.B.
Several people facing close to 60 charges following a dispute over the
native fishery in Burnt Church, N.B., entered pleas of not guilty Monday.
The charges were laid after vandalism and violence broke out Oct. 3
when thousands of native lobster traps were hauled from Miramichi Bay
and destroyed. A non-native cottage was also torched.
Non-native fishermen claimed they were only trying to stop natives from
fishing out of season.
