Chief
seeks resignation of Supreme Court judge
Calgary Herald
Friday, January 19, 2001
MILLBROOK, N.S. The co-chairman of the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi'kmaq
Chiefs called Thursday for the resignation of Atlantic Canada's representative
on the Supreme Court of Canada.
Lawrence Paul, chief of the Millbrook reserve, said recent comments
by Justice Michel Bastarache suggest he's biased against natives.
In the magazine Lawyers Weekly, Bastarache said he disagrees with the
court's decision on aboriginal fishing rights.
He expressed concern impartiality may have been damaged in a case, marked
by confrontations between native and non-native fishermen and federal
officers.
