About RISM
The Research Institute for the Study of Man was founded by Vera
D. Rubin and incorporated in 1955 as a non-profit organization
for educational and scientific purposes. To implement those goals,
RISM has conducted research and training programs, developed an
extensive library, supported scholarly exchanges and publications,
organized conferences, provided consultation services and stimulated
the initiation, development and dissemination of basic knowledge
in the behavioral sciences.
|
From its inception, RISM has fostered and conducted
multidisciplinary, cross-cultural studies of contemporary relevance.
Basic research projects of applied value have been undertaken in developing
and rapidly changing societies, in collaboration with scholars and
institutions from the host countries. Much of this seminal work was
pioneered in the Caribbean region which then afforded and continues
to provide unique possibilities for understanding the complex interplay
of historic, economic, social and cultural forces in multiethnic societies.
This integrated approach to multidisciplinary study now encompasses
a broad range of problems and issues in a variety of sociocultural
settings in other world areas.
