About the LCR

RISM LIBRARY FOR CARIBBEAN RESEARCH (LCR)

The holdings of the LCR are concentrated in the social sciences and history of the English-speaking Caribbean. Published monographs also include works on both the French and Dutch Caribbean and a smaller collection on the Hispanic Caribbean that focuses primarily on the Dominican Republic. Major subject areas include anthropology, sociology, politics and government, and economics. LCR subject categories include Caribbean literature, education, and religion. It also has notable holdings in technology, the arts, pure sciences, language, and the recreational and performing arts. Sub-topics within these subject areas include the medical sciences, agriculture and related technologies; music; fine and decorative arts; the life, zoological, earth, and botanical sciences; English, French, and Spanish Creoles; and cricket and other ball games.

The LCR also holds government documents, census, demographic and other statistical reports and journals. Caribbean journal holdings include all major journals published in or on the Caribbean region. LCR has Caribbean newspapers, both in print format and in microfilm, dating from the early nineteenth century. This includes almost complete runs of 34 newspapers from Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Jamaica, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United States Virgin Islands. Among these, the library holds almost complete runs of the Barbados Advocate and the Trinidad Guardian.

In addition, the LCR has vertical files on a wide range of subjects. Included are short papers, reprints and photocopies of articles not held in the library's journal collection, original and unpublished manuscripts, government documents, speeches, reports, political broadsides, tracts, and assorted print materials that provide significant supplemental research information.

The holdings the Library for Caribbean Research (LCR) are in the process of being transferred to the New York University Bobst Library (NYU). The transfer process is ongoing and is expected to be completed by the end of the 2006. Once cataloged, the RISM holdings of published and archival material and the complementary collections at NYU will be fully searchable in BobCat, NYU's online catalog:

http://www.bobcat.nyu.edu/html/geaclogin/geaclogin.html

Patrons can perform selective Boolean searches for LCR materials by limiting search requests to "Research Institute for the Study of Man." To search for LCR materials that have been transferred to NYU, a patron can search BobCat as follows:

(1) At the NYU library web site, http://www.bobcat.nyu.edu/html/geaclogin/geaclogin.html, click "Connect to BobCat" and then choose "Bobst Library (all locations)."

(2) Select "Keyword Search."

(3) Enter "Research Institute for the Study of Man" in the first "Search For" box and select from the pulldown menu "Related Name." In the second "Search For" box, enter a search item and the type of search desired from the pulldown menu (All Keywords, Author, Title, etc.). Citation information for each title found will include the statement "Research Institute for the Study of Man (former owner)," which indicates it has been accessioned by Bobst Library.

(4) A Boolean search using "RISMX" and "Related Name" using the same procedure as above will return materials in the LCR collections that were duplicate titles in the Bobst Library.

Undergraduate and Graduate Students and General Public Access to LCR Materials

Library patrons should contact their librarian to see if the title is available through their institutional library, its branches, or the public library. If not available, users may request either an interlibrary loan or a Metro title referral card through their home library.
